Greek Tax Authority Delays Mandatory B2B E-Invoicing Launch to March 2026
The Greek Public Revenue Authority (AADE) has announced a significant update regarding the rollout of mandatory B2B e-invoicing. Originally scheduled for February 2026, the launch has now been postponed to March 2, 2026.
This alteration facilitates an initial two-month soft launch aimed at ensuring a smooth transition for the estimated 38,000 mandated businesses, all of which must complete their migration to the new system by May 2, 2026.
Details of the Delay
The decision to delay the launch stems from the need to provide additional time for companies to adapt to the new requirements, particularly those that process significant volumes of transactions. The initial phase will target large resident businesses with an annual turnover exceeding €1 million, specifically focusing on domestic transactions and exports outside the EU. It is worth noting that, while the e-invoicing mandate applies to these transactions, the use of e-invoicing remains optional for businesses dealing with EU customers.
Phase 2 Implementation
Following the completion of the first phase, AADE plans to implement a second phase starting in October 2026. This phase will expand the e-invoicing mandate to include all other resident taxpayers, marking a significant step towards digitizing the invoicing landscape in Greece.
Updated Penalty Regime
In addition to the timeline changes, the Greek Tax Authority has introduced an updated penalty regime to reinforce compliance. While details of the penalties have yet to be fully disclosed, businesses should prepare for a stricter enforcement mechanism as the e-invoicing system takes effect.
